Japanese Ticket Lotteries vs First-Come Sales: What Visitors Must Check
Before planning a Japan trip around a concert or event, check how the tickets are allocated. A lottery application puts you into a selection process. A first-come sale offers tickets on a first-come, first-served basis. The English words “pre-sale” or “advance sale” alone do not tell you which system you are entering.
The next question is whether you can complete that particular sale’s requirements. A successful result, a payment confirmation and a ticket ready for admission are different things. Read the official ticket-sales page for your chosen event for deadlines, payment, ticket receipt, companions and identity checks before applying.

Sale labels
Read the Japanese labels first
Look for the allocation method alongside the name of the sale phase. An event can have several phases with different rules; do not carry the conditions from one phase into another.
| Label | What it tells you | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| 抽選 — lottery | Applications are collected during a window, with a result announced later. | Application closing time, result date, payment handling and ticket receipt. |
| 先着 — first-come | Tickets are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. | Opening time, eligibility and the steps needed to complete the order. |
| 先行 — advance phase | This names an earlier phase, rather than the allocation method. | Whether that phase also says 抽選 or 先着. |
Eplus separates its pre-order lottery and first-come procedures. Lawson’s ticket sales rules also distinguish lottery and first-come methods and allow limits on quantities and application counts. These guides explain the framework; the event’s own page supplies the conditions that apply to your order.

Lottery results
Lottery applications: plan for the result
For a lottery, note the opening and closing date of the application window, then the separate result date. Submitting an application is not a winning result. Until the outcome is known, keep an alternative plan for that part of your itinerary.
Submitting earlier within the window should not be treated as a way to improve your odds unless the organizer explicitly says so. The label 抽選 does not reveal the selection algorithm, and this guide does not estimate your chances. Equally, do not submit duplicate entries or extra accounts to work around the stated application limit.
Read the payment and cancellation conditions before applying. You may be committing to a purchase if selected, rather than reserving a chance to decide later. For example, Eplus’s cancellation guidance allows pre-order application cancellation during the application window, but not cancellation for personal reasons after that window closes. Its first-come orders also cannot be cancelled for personal reasons.
If you are considering several dates, find out whether they are ranked preferences or separate applications that could each succeed. Do not assume that winning one automatically cancels the others. Record every result date and any action that follows it.
A later first-come phase is a fallback only if the organizer actually announces it. A lottery result does not promise that the same seat category, date or quantity will be offered again.
First-come sales
First-come sales: prepare before the opening
For a first-come sale, timing matters because the allocation can run out while you are comparing dates or resolving an eligibility problem. Lawson’s rules say sales can end when the planned quantity is reached, even within the advertised sales period. Additional releases are possible, but they are not a guarantee.
Before the opening, decide on the performance date, seat category, quantity and acceptable alternatives. Check that you can use the offered sales route and payment and receipt methods. An English page or overseas sales route may cover only certain events or phases; finding one does not establish access to every domestic sale.
Opening the sale page, joining a queue or reaching a payment screen should not be treated as proof that your order has succeeded. Look for the seller’s actual confirmation and remaining instructions. A first-come order may still require payment by a separate deadline, depending on the method offered. Speed alone does not solve payment, account or ticket-receipt restrictions.
Payment
Payment: know when you commit
Do not assume you can wait until the lottery result is announced to choose a payment method or make the payment. Lawson’s payment guide says credit-card payment for a successful lottery application is processed between the end of the application period and the result announcement. It also warns that some overseas-issued cards may not be accepted. This is a Lawson example, not a universal rule for every seller or payment method.
Other methods can require action by a deadline. Eplus’s service guide says convenience-store, ATM and internet-banking payments must be completed within the stated payment period; the specific deadline appears in the order details. If that deadline falls before you arrive in Japan, check whether you can complete the required payment from your current location. Do not plan to pay after arrival without confirming the dates.
Write down the full date, time and stated time zone. If the event specifies Japan Standard Time, convert that deadline to your own location and keep the original JST time in your reminder. “Tonight” in your home country may already be tomorrow in Japan.
Choose the method carefully. Lawson’s rules do not allow a payment-method change after application completion. Eplus has limited change options, depending on the method and stage. A change that another visitor managed is not a promise that your order can be changed.
Ticket receipt
Receiving your ticket: payment alone does not make it ready for admission
Check when and how you receive the actual admission ticket, separately from payment. Paying successfully does not mean a paper ticket has already been collected or an electronic ticket is already available in the required app.
For paper tickets, check the designated pickup place, collection window and information or documents required. Match that window to your arrival and event dates. For delivery, check the allowed address and delivery conditions before choosing it; do not assume a hotel will accept the shipment. For cinema plans, our Japan cinema ticket booking guide covers language versions and cinema entry.
For an electronic ticket, check which app and device are required and when the ticket becomes available to download. The Eplus Smaticket guide says download timing varies by event, and a screenshot of the ticket is not valid for admission. Use the admission method specified for your ticket rather than treating the application email as the ticket itself. For eplus Smaticket, follow its app instructions before deleting the app or changing phones after download; doing either may erase the ticket.
Keep these four checks together. They are questions to resolve, not a fixed sequence: card payment can happen before a lottery result is announced, and ticket issuance can open later.

Companions and ID
Companions and identity checks come before you apply
If you are travelling with someone, read the rules for every attendee before requesting several tickets. Check whether companions must be registered in advance, whether names can be changed and whether each person needs an account or device.
Eplus’s companion-registration guidance says that when a sale requires attendee details, companions must be registered before you apply. This does not apply to every Eplus event.
Distribution also depends on the event. Eplus’s Smaticket distribution guidance distinguishes events that allow distribution from those with additional conditions. Registered-companion and identity rules can restrict who receives or uses a ticket. Being able to move a ticket between devices does not establish permission to substitute a different attendee.
For an identity-checked event, check which identity documents the organizer accepts, how attendee names must be recorded and whether the applicant must attend. Confirm whether your own documents meet those specific rules. Do not assume that any passport is automatically accepted, that one person’s ID covers the group or that two tickets can always be shown on one phone.
Account and phone-verification requirements are another eligibility check. Resolve them before applying, using the seller’s current guidance. This article focuses on sale methods and ticket readiness; it does not walk through phone-number verification. See our Japanese phone numbers for bookings guide for that separate check.
Trip checklist
A short worksheet for your trip
Save the official event URL and fill in these items for the exact phase you intend to use:
- Sale: phase name, 抽選 or 先着, date, seat category and quantity limit.
- Timing: application close or sale opening, result date and stated time zone.
- Commitment: cancellation conditions, automatic payment or manual deadline, and usable payment method.
- Receipt: paper pickup or electronic app, availability date, collection deadline and required information.
- People: applicant and companion names, registration, distribution and accepted identity documents.
If the page does not answer a requirement that would prevent you from using the ticket, ask the organizer or seller before applying. An unresolved eligibility condition is a reason to keep that event out of your confirmed travel plan. Once your order succeeds, follow its actual payment and receipt instructions and keep checking official event notices before attending.
FAQ
FAQ
Does applying on the first day improve my lottery chances?
Do not assume it does. A lottery application window is not a first-come queue. Follow any selection rules the organizer publishes; this guide does not claim that entry time changes your odds.
Does 先行 mean my ticket is confirmed?
No. It identifies an advance phase. Check whether that phase uses a lottery or first-come method, then distinguish an application acknowledgment from a successful result or order confirmation.
Can I wait until I reach Japan to pay?
Only if the offered method and deadline allow it. A payment deadline can fall before your arrival, and some lottery applications use automatic card payment. Check this before applying.
Will losing a lottery give me another chance in a general sale?
Only if a later sale is announced and offers tickets you can use. Neither a later release nor your preferred date or seat category is guaranteed.
Is a winning result or confirmation email enough at the door?
Check the ticket’s admission instructions. A result or order email may still leave payment, paper collection, app download, companion distribution or identity checks to complete. For Eplus Smaticket, the ticket must be used through its specified admission method; a screenshot is not an admission ticket.
