Common questions

FAQ

Can I ride the Nozomi Shinkansen with JR Pass?

No. The JR Pass does not cover Nozomi or Mizuho trains. Use Hikari (Tokyo–Osaka: ~2h40m vs Nozomi’s 2h15m) or Sakura for westbound routes. The time difference is minimal.

Can I use JR Pass on Tokyo Metro or Toei Subway?

No. JR Pass only covers JR lines. In Tokyo, that means Yamanote Line, Chuo Line, etc. — but not Metro or Toei. For subway unlimited rides, get a separate Tokyo Subway Ticket.

Is it cheaper to buy individual Shinkansen tickets?

For a simple Tokyo ↔ Kyoto round trip with no side trips, yes — individual tickets cost ~¥28,000 vs ¥50,000 for a 7-day pass. The pass only wins when you add more long-distance legs.

Can children use the JR Pass?

Yes. Children aged 6–11 get a child pass at roughly half price. Under 6 ride free (no seat guaranteed). Children 12+ need an adult pass.
