Tokyo Sake Tastings in English: Compare Four Guided Programs
Compare WASAKE’s English-guided programs in Asakusa, Sake Studio Tokyo’s omakase in Kanda Ogawamachi, and MANGA DOJO’s two-hour class in Ikebukuro by duration, teaching format and published prices. WASAKE offers specialist-led and sommelier-led formats; Sake Studio features seven seasonal sake varieties; MANGA DOJO adds temperature comparisons and a decorated masu. This shortlist covers four guided program options from three operators, including WASAKE’s two formats. Choose a session around your available time and the neighbourhood you plan to visit.

Published plans and hours were checked on October 10, 2026. Choose a date before relying on availability, and read the terms of the exact booking channel you use.
Quick answer
- Consider Sake Studio Tokyo in Kanda Ogawamachi for a guided omakase lasting over two hours, with seven sake varieties and small bites. Its public sessions use selected weekend dates.
- Choose the Asakusa WASAKE session if an English-speaking specialist and a beginner-friendly format matter most.
- Choose MANGA DOJO Tokyo in Ikebukuro for a two-hour session with temperature comparisons and a take-home masu. Group size changes the price substantially.
- Separate guided programs from self-paced tasting. A venue’s collection size does not tell you how many pours a ticket includes.
Compare the format before the price
These are guided tasting programs to reserve for a first visit. The comparison focuses on explanation, session length and published prices; it does not rank every sake bar or brewery in Tokyo.
| Option | Duration | Price evidence | What distinguishes it | Language |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sake Studio Tokyo public session | Over 2 hr | JPY 11,990 per person listed; direct-booking discount shown on the final booking page | Four-course format, seven seasonal sake varieties, unlimited refills and small bites; up to six guests | English/Japanese with native English-speaking sommeliers |
| WASAKE Deep Dive | Up to 105 min | JPY 8,000 per person, operator page | Beginner-oriented guided tasting | English specialist |
| WASAKE Sommelier Edition | Up to 105 min | JPY 11,000 per person, operator page | Comparative premium flights | English sommelier |
| MANGA DOJO Tokyo, Ikebukuro | 2 hr | Solo JPY 26,400; two-person group JPY 13,200 each; groups above three JPY 8,800 each | Temperature comparison, snacks and a decorated masu | English interpretation; under-20s excluded in Klook listing |
The prices are published plan figures, not quotes for a selected date. MANGA DOJO’s detailed page does not clearly price a group of exactly three; request that quote rather than assuming the lowest rate. Bottle counts also say nothing about serving size.
Kanda Ogawamachi: a longer guided omakase
Sake Studio Tokyo lists public omakase tastings at Linden Haus, 1-9-9 Kanda Ogawamachi. The official booking description gives a duration of over two hours, seven seasonal sake varieties and small bites. Native English-speaking sommeliers lead the session in English and Japanese. The operator advertises a four-course format and unlimited refills. Seven varieties describes the selection, not a fixed number of pours.
The program focuses on comparisons: rice and brewing methods, serving temperature and drinking vessels. That guided, educational format may suit a first tasting if you want explanations rather than simply a larger collection to choose from. The site does not label it specifically as a beginners’ class, so compare the stated topics with your interests.
Public sessions are listed on selected weekends two or three times a month, with up to six guests. The published price is JPY 11,990 per person, and the site says a direct-booking discount appears on the final page. We have not selected a session or obtained that discounted total; the published price does not explicitly state its tax treatment. Use the official booking page for the selected date and complete payable amount.
This is the longer guided option in the comparison. Plan for the stated two-hour-plus session and the journey to Kanda Ogawamachi rather than treating it as a quick bar stop. Transport and hotel pickup are excluded in the operator’s booking description.
Asakusa: choose between standard and advanced
WASAKE’s current official LP lists two programs lasting up to 105 minutes: a Deep Dive Tasting at JPY 8,000 with up to 10 labels tailored to the guest’s palate, and a Sommelier Edition at JPY 11,000 with comparative flights and premium labels. Both are conducted in English by a specialist or sommelier.
The same venue also offers self-paced tasting from a wider library of labels, described on the Japanese site as 50-plus varieties. Do not treat that walk-in format as equivalent to the guided 105-minute programs. Read the package line carefully, because the format, pour size, price, and availability differ.
The official LP says light rice-cracker-style snacks are provided, not a meal or formal pairing. It also says non-drinkers and children may accompany a group, subject to seating, while alcohol cannot be served to anyone under 20. The venue is near Tawaramachi and Asakusa stations; go to the street-level storefront rather than the residential lobby.
The operator’s direct-booking FAQ lists a full refund until 24 hours before the session and a 100% charge within 24 hours or for a no-show. A reseller booking may have different terms. The address is 101 The Asakusa Residence, 1-11-1 Asakusa. Pair this stop with the neighbourhood planning in our Asakusa hotel base guide.
The two-hour class with a souvenir
MANGA DOJO Tokyo’s operator page describes a two-hour Ikebukuro session with five or six sake styles, warm-sake comparisons, light snacks and a wooden masu decorated with a brush pen. The operator homepage says English interpretation is included in its experiences.
The detailed rate table lists JPY 26,400 for one participant, JPY 13,200 each for two, and JPY 8,800 each for groups of more than three (four or more). It does not state a price for exactly three. The operator describes occasional weekend sessions and lists an 18:00–20:00 sake slot on its homepage; neither confirms your chosen date. Use the official inquiry form for a three-person quote and the date-specific start time.
A couple should compare the two-person rate with WASAKE’s per-person prices: the longer duration alone does not establish better value. The temperature exercise and keepsake are reasons to investigate MANGA DOJO when Ikebukuro fits your day. Adding it to another tasting also adds another booking and more samples, so choose the format that answers your main interest.
The MANGA DOJO sales listing excludes participants under 20. It does not establish whether a non-drinking companion may attend; review the exact package’s eligibility, identification terms and snack ingredients for your group.
Guided tasting or self-paced sampling
For a first tasting, decide whether you want someone to guide a comparison or the freedom to select samples. A guided sequence gives you a shared set to discuss; self-paced sampling lets you choose the labels and pace. These are different ways to use the session, so compare the program’s actual inclusions before comparing its collection size. Sake Studio’s advertised unlimited refills distinguish its omakase from a ticket with a fixed sample count; compare that term with WASAKE’s listed program inclusions rather than equating seven varieties with seven servings.
WASAKE advertises self-paced tasting separately from its guided sessions. The collection size on its Japanese page refers to the wider library, not the number of pours included in every ticket. Choose the guided program when explanation is the point of the visit, and read the separate walk-in terms if you mainly want to sample individual labels.
Keep a meal separate in the itinerary: the guided program describes light snacks rather than a full pairing dinner. A host can explain the samples, but your schedule should still leave room to stop, eat and head back without rushing into another tasting.
What to check before reserving
- Review the selected date’s availability, total price, currency and cancellation terms. WASAKE’s direct-booking cancellation rule may differ from a reseller’s.
- For language, age, dietary or serving-size needs, check the package’s interpreter, eligibility, snack ingredients and pour details.
- Read the meeting address and late-arrival rule in the booking instructions; allow time to find the correct entrance.
- For Sake Studio Tokyo, select a scheduled public session and review the final direct-booking price; do not substitute the separate private-tasting rates.
- For exactly three MANGA DOJO participants, request the rate and date-specific start time through the official inquiry form.
Sources and freshness
Operator sources: WASAKE Japanese site, WASAKE program prices and FAQ, Sake Studio Tokyo public sessions, Sake Studio booking description and MANGA DOJO’s detailed sake program. MANGA DOJO’s age restriction is separately attributed to its linked Klook sales page. Checked October 10, 2026; the prices are published figures, not confirmation of a selected booking.
The National Tax Agency’s April 2026 guidance confirms that the drinking age remains 20.
FAQ
Do I need to know anything about sake first?
WASAKE describes its Deep Dive as beginner-oriented and offers English guidance. Sake Studio Tokyo explains tasting, brewing and flavour in a guided session; MANGA DOJO describes style and temperature comparisons. Choose a program whose stated format matches what you want to learn.
Can someone under 20 join a sake tasting?
Japanese law prohibits drinking under 20. MANGA DOJO’s sales listing excludes participants under 20. WASAKE separately says children and non-drinkers may accompany a group subject to seating, while alcohol cannot be served to anyone under 20. We have not established Sake Studio’s policy for under-20 companions. Attendance and alcohol service are different questions; check the exact package for a mixed-age group.
Does a larger sake collection mean better value?
Not automatically. WASAKE’s 50-plus-label library is a venue collection, not a promise that every program includes that many pours. Compare guidance, session length, included samples and snacks against the published ticket price. A smaller guided selection can still fit a first tasting if your goal is to understand a few contrasts.
