Capsule Hotel Luggage Rules: Where to Put Your Suitcase

You can bring a suitcase to many capsule hotels, but its storage place depends on the property and room type. A separate locker, a cabin’s storage box and an under-bed drawer are different arrangements. Before booking, check whether your bag fits, when you can reach it and where it goes after checkout.

The answer is not always “outside the pod.” The Millennials Shibuya provides under-bed suitcase storage in its SmartPods. At other properties, the space beside the bed or a valuables box should not be mistaken for a full-size luggage locker. A reservation for a sleeping place does not settle these questions.

These are the policies of the named property or brand FAQ, not a promise about every capsule hotel in Tokyo. First Cabin’s recent Akihabara change shows why a branch notice can matter more than a chain-wide FAQ.

nine hours: plan around the cleaning window and checkout

The nine hours FAQ offers staff holding for bags that do not fit in lockers, except at Narita. On consecutive nights, leave your capsule 11:00–15:00 (Narita: 10:00–14:00). You can use a lounge where available; some branches have none.

Arrival-day holding before check-in is available except at Narita; post-checkout holding is not. Ask your branch whether bags can remain in the same locker on consecutive nights and how to access them during cleaning. The FAQ does not settle those details.

If your departure is much later than checkout, arrange the bag’s next location before paying for the stay. An evening flight does not extend a hotel’s luggage policy. This can affect your choice more than whether the capsule itself meets your sleeping needs.

First Cabin Atagoyama: choose the category, then ask about the suitcase

At First Cabin Atagoyama, First Class Cabin is 4.4 m², with space beside the bed for changing clothes. Business Class Cabin is 2.5 m². Its listed security box is 74 cm wide × 15 cm deep × 45 cm high: a valuables compartment, not a conventional suitcase locker. Both categories have a lockable box, while their cabin entrances use curtains or screens.

The property lists a cloakroom. That establishes a storage facility, not its capacity for your particular case. Ask where a suitcase of your dimensions would go in the category you intend to book, whether that place locks and whether you can open the bag there. The larger First Class layout does not prove that any size of case can be left beside the bed.

Atagoyama says consecutive bookings check out only on the final day. It also lists cabin cleaning every three nights, with a cabin move if you request cleaning in between. Confirm how that affects your belongings. Daily checkout, cleaning frequency and access to the cabin are separate questions.

Atagoyama advertises cloakroom service before check-in and after checkout, but does not publish a collection deadline. Confirm your intended collection time with the branch. The chain FAQ separately excludes post-checkout storage at Haneda Terminal 1 and all luggage holding at unstaffed Matsue. Do not turn those exceptions into a guarantee at other branches.

The Millennials Shibuya: an under-bed drawer, with size still worth checking

The SmartPod room page describes a drawer beneath the bed for an open large suitcase and lists a luggage-storage lock among its rental items. That is a different layout from a separate locker elsewhere in the building. The Shibuya FAQ lists an under-bed storage footprint of approximately 90 × 145 cm and a lock available from reception. It does not give usable height in that answer. Compare your case opened out, then confirm height clearance, multiple bags and access with the hotel.

The property FAQ generally accepts bags from 07:00 on check-in day until 23:00 on checkout day, excluding valuables and fragile items. For consecutive stays, it lists cleaning every seventh day and asks guests to request the cleaning date at check-in. This does not establish unrestricted access during every cleaning operation; discuss that when arranging cleaning. Guests must be 18 or older.

If you are deciding between this property and a conventional room, compare the full stay rather than the storage feature alone. The drawer answers where a suitcase can go; it does not turn a SmartPod into a private hotel room. The Shibuya hotel-base guide offers other accommodation choices in the area.

Read the branch notice

Branch exceptions that can change your plan

First Cabin Akihabara: front-desk holding and delivery receiving ended

A property notice dated August 19, 2026 announces that, from October 1, 2026, First Cabin Akihabara ends front-desk baggage holding before check-in and after checkout, along with receipt of advance luggage, courier deliveries and shopping parcels. It directs guests to lockers installed inside the property.

The notice does not give locker dimensions, prices or a guaranteed available space. Confirm those points before relying on the lockers. Do not send a suitcase to this branch on the strength of the chain’s general FAQ.

Airport properties: distinguish an oversized bag from ordinary locker storage

nine hours Narita Airport cannot hold large items that need storage beyond its lockers and directs guests to airport baggage storage. It also excludes pre-check-in holding and advance shipments. This is not a statement that every suitcase is prohibited: ask whether yours fits the available locker. First Cabin Haneda Terminal 1 does not hold bags after checkout, according to its chain FAQ.

These are baggage exceptions. They do not establish that an airport counter will be open or have space when you arrive. Identify a specific alternative, its collection time and its location before using either property for a trip with a large case.

Plan the whole stay

Check three moments: arrival, cleaning and departure

Original three-stage checklist showing arrival, the overnight stay and departure.
Confirm a place for the bag at each stage. Original Coverstories planning diagram; the stages are not hotel opening hours.
  1. Arrival: Give the hotel your bag’s external height, width and depth, including wheels and handles. Include the number of bags and your arrival time. Ask whether early holding is available and whether it ends when you receive your locker or cabin.
  2. During the stay: Ask where you can open the case without blocking a walkway or disturbing sleeping guests. For consecutive nights, confirm whether you keep the same storage space, whether you must move your belongings and when you can reach them during cleaning.
  3. Departure: Give a collection time, not just “after checkout.” Ask about the deadline, any charge, excluded items and what happens if the hotel’s storage space is full. Save the reply with the exact branch and booking name.

For a one-night stay, put what you need for the evening and morning in a small separate bag before reaching the sleeping area. Keep toiletries, a change of clothes and charging equipment accessible without opening the entire suitcase repeatedly. Follow staff directions about packing areas and quiet hours.

Keep passports, money and essential medication with you or in the appropriate secure compartment. A privacy screen, a suitcase’s zip lock and a hotel’s lockable box serve different purposes. Ask staff which storage is suitable for valuables; do not assume a front-desk bag hold includes them.

You can send this question before booking:

I am considering [exact room category] at [property] for [dates]. I have [number] suitcase(s), each [height × width × depth in cm, including wheels]. Where would they be stored? Can I access them during cleaning on consecutive nights? Can I leave them before check-in at [time] and collect them after checkout at [time]? Please confirm any size limits, charges or excluded items.

Replace the bracketed details with your actual plan. A reply about one property or one room category should stay attached to that reservation rather than being treated as a rule for the whole chain.

A smaller overnight bag

When forwarding your main bag is useful

Forwarding a suitcase to your next hotel can let you use a capsule with an overnight bag. First confirm that the receiving property accepts deliveries, what name and stay date belong on the label, and when the carrier can deliver. Carry enough clothing and essentials for the interval. Delivery timing is not established by the capsule reservation.

For deliveries to nine hours, its FAQ specifies the check-in date and a label with the guest’s name in Roman letters and that date; Narita does not accept them. The Millennials Shibuya asks for the stay date, full reservation-holder name and hotel address, and does not accept payment on receipt. First Cabin Akihabara’s new notice prohibits receiving these deliveries.

Sending the main case elsewhere solves a bag-size problem only when the receiving hotel and timing are confirmed. It does not remove a capsule’s cleaning restrictions. For several nights with frequent unpacking or a need to rest in your room during the day, compare a conventional room as well. The Ueno hotel-base guide is another place to compare accommodation around your Tokyo plans.

Practical questions

FAQ

Does “luggage storage” mean a suitcase-sized locker?

No. It may mean a small valuables box, a locker, a drawer or staffed holding. Send your external bag dimensions and ask which facility applies to your booked category. Also ask whether you can open the case there.

Can I leave my suitcase in a cabin that has no locking door?

Follow the property’s directions for that cabin and bag size. A curtain or privacy screen is not secure storage. Establish where the case belongs and which lockable compartment, if any, is suitable for valuables.

Do I need to take every bag out during daytime cleaning?

The rule for leaving the sleeping area does not by itself settle the rule for stored bags. Confirm locker retention, bag moves and access during cleaning with the chosen property. Do not infer one from the other.

Can I use hotel baggage holding when I am not staying there?

The policies compared here concern hotel guests around their stays. They do not establish a public storage service for non-guests. Use a separately confirmed luggage-storage service if you have no reservation.

Is forwarding the suitcase enough for a late departure?

Only if you also have somewhere for your overnight bag after checkout, or can comfortably carry it. Confirm the delivery and collection arrangements for the main case and make a separate plan for the bag you keep with you.
